My parents started me on piano lessons when I was 6 years old. Like most other children, I would have preferred to be doing something else with my time. My teacher was, it seemed to me, old and grouchy. When I did something wrong, she would tap my hands with a little stick or rod that she always had in her hand. As I grew older, however, I began to appreciate these lessons.
Eventually I taught myself to play piano and organ by ear, buying and studying every book I could locate on the subject.
I am so happy today that my parents did not relent when I protested about my piano lessons and practicing chords and
scales.
I just cannot explain how gratifying it is to sit down at the piano or organ and play to my heart’s delight. A sad or blue mood soon becomes a happy one.
