Painting Landscapes on Canvas

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

How would you like to paint using a medium that looks like watercolor or oil, but is neither of them?

Acrylic painting is both fun and very relaxing. Painting landscapes and other subjects can easily be done.

Acrylic paint is very versatile and is very good for beginners and professional painters alike. By adding water or acrylic gel, the painter can get different effects.

Masters can do mural paints; beginners start on canvas, painting still landscapes, portraits and still life.

If you’re a beginner, don’t despair. You can learn to paint a landscape on canvas very easily. More than that, you can look like a master even if you only use acrylic. Squeeze some paint from the tube, mix them on your easel, and make some incomprehensible noises. People will think you’re a master.

You will need acrylic paint in tubes or jars, brushes, water, towels, canvas, easel and palette.

Now the first thing to do when painting landscapes is not to panic. Having set your easel and equipment in a public park or sanctuary, squeeze just a small amount of paint on your palette. Spray a little water. This is to avoid it from drying up before you even make the first master stroke.

Dip the brush in the water bottle. To prevent water from running down, blot the brush on the towel. If you want opaque colors, apply the acrylic paint thickly on the canvass. A blue sky for example needs a thinner layer of paint than the waves of the lake.

The beauty of using acrylic paints is that when it dries, you can just paint over it. Move a little backward and forward to examine your work. Then with a stroke of inspiration, mix some white, yellow and green color with a bit more water. Use this to paint over the tree trunk and get the reflection you want.

Finish the other parts of the canvas painting, such as the sky and the lake with a flourish. When you finish, smile to your audience and fold your easel.

Next time you can get the finished look of oil in your canvas painting. You can do this using acrylic. Just try to vary the amount of water, gels, mediums, or and pastes and get the correct consistency.

Supplies Needed for Face Painting

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

The art of face painting can be a relatively low-cost venture. Amateurs and professionals alike can enjoy face painting either for profit or simply to entertain their own children. Should you decide to give it a try, there are many books available for beginners. If you prefer a hands-on approach to learning, a safe bet might be to begin with a kit. Adventurous moms can find face painting supplies as close as their make-up drawer.

Most supplies for face painting include water-based paints for easy removal. The problem sometimes with the face paint is the quality of the product. Hot weather can be an enemy as perspiration can ruin the artwork or cause the person being painted to perspire while having the paint applied.

Serious painters will find the need to invest in proper, good quality brushes. Detail brushes are very inexpensive. A brush can make a big difference in the finished quality of your work. If you purchase a cheap brush with an end that is too big or frays or scatters easily, you could be sorely disappointed in the outcome.

Theme sets are a popular choice for face painting. Used especially at Halloween, these are sold with instructions to achieve whole face outcomes. A person can enjoy becoming like a lion, monster, pirate, mermaid, ghost, cat, mouse, favorite cartoon character, and much more. A parent will want to be sure their child is of the right maturity level to sit still long enough for the paint to be applied from start to finish.

If you don’t want the full face effect, don’t worry. Smaller designs can be added to enhance the effect of your costume. Some stores sell rubber stamps in their supplies for face painting. The stamps are created with a deeper impression and simple designs to make fill-in work quick and easy. They have foam backing for easier use.

Some face painting kits are sold for as little as $4 a kit. These would be fine for children to use for play or for beginning artists to use just for practice or fun. They provide a low-cost option for charity events, such as school fundraisers or church functions where the overhead must be kept low. Some kits are sold with 6 face paint pencils, a sharpener, sponge, and white face paint for a base color.

For the more advanced artists, stencils are sold at prices ranging from $35 to $85; including a video. These are used with airbrushing, which has become a more popular form of face painting. Glitter gels and stick-on jewelry can be added to accent your artwork.

When choosing face painting supplies, you may want to include paper, pencil, and markers to give yourself a starting point for ideas. You also could buy a piece of poster board or cardstock to show your available choices for purchase when setting up your booth. Maybe you’ll want to invest in a carry-all, chair, and small folding table as well.

Clowns and Their Face Paint

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Clowns have been long known for their painted faces.    Each clown face is a painting  unique to the image that person wants to convey.  The clowns must match their faces to the characters in their acts.

Silly clowns often visit children’s hospitals to spread joy among gloomy patients.  They are also known to be one of the main attractions in many circus acts.  What circus would be complete without a clown of some sort?   One circus scene is that of many clowns stuffing themselves into a tiny car that is driven around the stage as they perform their silly antics.

Clowns can be rented for children’s birthday parties.  Some have even been known to perform on busy city sidewalks in bigger cities of the United States,  accepting donations from charitable passersby.

Who hasn’t heard of the famous clown Ronald McDonald?  Part of his fame is attributed to his well-known and loved clown face painting.   It is a welcome clown face to any town that sports the restaurant with which he is associated.  Many children have been drawn like a magnet to sit on a Ronald statue posted outside a McDonald’s restaurant.  Collectors stock Ronald McDonald memorabilia as well.

Another clown who reached fame long ago was called Bozo the Clown.  Bozo’s face had a large white base, covering even his neck area.   There was a big red, bulbous nose, exaggerated red mouth, and tall black eyebrows.   He complimented his painted face with crazy red hair.  He was possibly the most famous of clowns.  There was even a Mexican version of Bozo.

Each clown must perfect his or her own face painting to convey his or her personality.   There are sad clowns,  happy clowns and perpetually surprised clowns.  They invest in their look, carefully choosing supplies and additions to their painted faces that will last throughout their act and must spend hours practicing to make each act its best.

For those who entertain the notion of becoming a clown, there are books available to guide you on your journey to find the clown face and style that is right for you.  The eyes alone can speak volumes, so choose your design carefully.  A second revealing feature is that of the mouth area.  The face is meant to enhance the overall image you want to portray.  It should compliment your own features.

The supplies for a clown face involve concealer, foundations, highlights, shadows, neutralizers, brushes, glitter, mineral powders, sealers, adhesives, cleaners, applicators, sponges, and skin treatments.  Invest in good quality supplies for a long-lasting satisfaction with the products.

Airbrush Art On T-Shirts

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Putting airbrush art on T-shirts can be a fun and creative hobby. For those who want to take it a step further, it can also be a fun and exciting business. T-shirts sporting airbrush art are popular and unique to wear. What makes airbrushed t-shirts so unique is that one-of-a-kind images can be created, giving the wearer a shirt that no one else has. This makes for a pretty fun hobby or profitable business.

The great thing with airbrush art is that you really do not have to know how to draw. All you need to know how to do is successfully use the stencil that you wish to use for your design. The main key is learning how to control the airbrush gun so that you can get the paint only where you want it and not overcast the paint where you do not want it. Once you master that then your options are endless with the vast array of stencils out there.

A bottom feed or siphon feed airbrush works best when putting airbrush art onto a t-shirt. You should always stick with a name brand airbrush when airbrushing. The best name brands to go with are the Iwata or Badger. The Paasche is also a good quality airbrush. You will save yourself money in the long run when using a name brand versus a generic airbrush.

When choosing an airbrush compressor, keep in mind that painting airbrush art onto t-shirts does require a high psi. The psi setting should be between 40 to 60. Be sure that your compressor is rated for the type of work you are going to be doing. In this case it will be airbrushing t-shirts. When doing airbrush art onto t-shirts as a business, then invest in a commercial air compressor. It will be worth it in the long run.

Most of the times you will need to heat set your paints so that they can be washed without fading or bleeding. There are a few ways that you can heat set your airbrush art onto the t-shirts so that it lasts. One way is to allow the design to fully dry.  Then place a cloth over it and iron the shirt with the cloth between the t-shirt and the iron. Always keep the iron moving though, so that you do not burn the material.   Another great way, if you are doing this at home, is to allow the design to dry and then turn the shirt inside out and throw it into the dryer for about 40 to 45 minutes on the highest heat setting. After this your design will hold up to laundering.

If you use a paint that does not require heat setting, then you should still set the design. A great way to do this with paints that do not require heat setting is to place the t-shirt by itself into a sink full of cold water that has salt mixed into it. The cold water and salt will help to keep the shirt when it is laundered from fading or bleeding.

Placing airbrush art onto t-shirts can be fun and exciting. However, you are not limited to t-shirts. Get creative and airbrush designs onto cotton underwear for you significant other. Airbrush socks for your family. The possibilities with clothing and airbrush art are limitless.

Airbrush Art On Nails

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Almost everyone loves some form of art or another. A lot of women love to get their nails manicured. So why not combine the two together? Well that is exactly what has happened. Airbrush art has combined with the manicure to give women great opportunities to use their nails to show off great artwork. Airbrush art applied to the fingernails gives a great flare to a manicure. The designs are only limited to the stencils which the artist can get their hands on and the artist’s own imagination.

This form of airbrush art has become very popular, and most salons around the world are offering this to their clients. Airbrush art is also available on fake nails and are sold at almost every store that carries fake nails. You too can get in on this craze and start your own fun and exciting business offering airbrush art on nails.

Airbrush art on nails is not for the beginner just getting started in airbrushing. The work area is very small, and the artist has to have mastered the techniques involved with airbrushing. One main problem that beginners face is over spraying. Over spraying is when the artist sprays outside of the area in which they are trying to spray. When working with nails you do not want to end up airbrushing the person’s fingers. So before attempting to do airbrush art on nails gain some experience with airbrushing on larger surfaces.

The type of airbrush art you are doing will determine the type of airbrush that you need. When doing airbrush art on nails go with either the Iwata HP-A or the Iwata HP-B. These are great for airbrushing nails. Even if you do not go with the Iwata, though, remember to always go with name brand airbrushes and never use any knockoff airbrushes.

You will need an air compressor that is designed for airbrushing on nails. The best air compressor to use is the Iwata Studios Series Silver Jet Air Compressor. While this one is the best one, you can go with any small compressor that has an 18 psi. Preferably get an air compressor that will adjust between 10-18 psi if you do not go with the Iwata Silver Jet.

To do airbrush art on nails you will need nail art stencils or nail art masks. The nail art masks are reusable masks that have an adhesive that does not leave any residue on the nails. Of course if you are really creative and very good you can freehand the airbrush art right onto the nails.

If not, then take the time and invest in nail art stencils and masks. The paint that you will use when doing airbrush art on nails is water based. A bottom coat and a top coat are what protects the water based paint from being damaged. You will also need to spray a light coat of what is called varnish between the artwork and the top coat. Varnish is just a water based clear coat that will protect the paint from getting brush strokes when you apply the top coat.
