How To Create Your Own Face Painting Pattern

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

There are many books available on crafts, painting and ideas for fun things to do with kids. However, face painting is simple and always a winner, especially with younger children. The only drawback is that they have such a hard time deciding upon just one!

There is a book called ‘100 Things for Kids to Make and Do’ that has several ideas for costumes and face painting. Most of the time a face painting pattern is not actually something of material substance, but a set of directions and photographs of the steps and finished artwork. It’s just easier, I suppose, to think of them as patterns.

Many kids crafts books have at least a small section with a face painting pattern of some sort. The more complicated face patterns will come in handy when you need the step-by-step directions. Good directions will keep it simple, showing individual photos of each layer as it is applied.

Halloween seems to be one of the most popular times to paint faces, especially for painting the entire face. The choices are wide and include such as: Vampires, clowns, witches, Winnie the Pooh, ghosts, pirates, genies, dinosaurs, bumble bees and bunnies, to name a few. Many parents just can’t resist painting the ever popular Winnie the Pooh. A ghost is popular, low-cost and simple for those who may be strapped for cash at Halloween, as you need only white paint (maybe a little black circle around each eye if you want a better effect to emphasize the holes.) Many parents just can’t afford the costumes or simply don’t want to invest in something that will be outgrown before the next year’s event. This makes face painting a great choice. You can paint just the right face to wear one of your own outfits to make it work!

A bunny face is a simple face painting pattern to follow as well. The most relevant feature would be the buck teeth, followed by the whiskers. If you want a mouse pattern, this also is easy to follow. Use a dot of paint to accent the nose. Place tiny dots atop each side of the top lip and apply whiskers coming away from the dots towards each cheek area. If you want a little more pizzazz, add darkened eyebrows, perhaps creating funny shapes for them.

An unusual pattern that isn’t overused here in the United States is the panda face. It is best when used with a base of white over the whole face, big black spots surrounding the eye area, a black spot covering the end of the nose, black lips, and a black line from the base of the nose to the top lip. Then dot some small black spots over the lip area under each nostril, add a set of fake ears and you’re good to go!

There is a wonderful children’s book by Don Bortolloti which provides excellent close-ups of tiger faces you can use as a pattern.

But remember, whole face painting is not the only face painting you can do. Sometimes all you need is a small picture on the cheek for just the right effect.

Clowns and Their Face Paint

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Clowns have been long known for their painted faces.    Each clown face is a painting  unique to the image that person wants to convey.  The clowns must match their faces to the characters in their acts.

Silly clowns often visit children’s hospitals to spread joy among gloomy patients.  They are also known to be one of the main attractions in many circus acts.  What circus would be complete without a clown of some sort?   One circus scene is that of many clowns stuffing themselves into a tiny car that is driven around the stage as they perform their silly antics.

Clowns can be rented for children’s birthday parties.  Some have even been known to perform on busy city sidewalks in bigger cities of the United States,  accepting donations from charitable passersby.

Who hasn’t heard of the famous clown Ronald McDonald?  Part of his fame is attributed to his well-known and loved clown face painting.   It is a welcome clown face to any town that sports the restaurant with which he is associated.  Many children have been drawn like a magnet to sit on a Ronald statue posted outside a McDonald’s restaurant.  Collectors stock Ronald McDonald memorabilia as well.

Another clown who reached fame long ago was called Bozo the Clown.  Bozo’s face had a large white base, covering even his neck area.   There was a big red, bulbous nose, exaggerated red mouth, and tall black eyebrows.   He complimented his painted face with crazy red hair.  He was possibly the most famous of clowns.  There was even a Mexican version of Bozo.

Each clown must perfect his or her own face painting to convey his or her personality.   There are sad clowns,  happy clowns and perpetually surprised clowns.  They invest in their look, carefully choosing supplies and additions to their painted faces that will last throughout their act and must spend hours practicing to make each act its best.

For those who entertain the notion of becoming a clown, there are books available to guide you on your journey to find the clown face and style that is right for you.  The eyes alone can speak volumes, so choose your design carefully.  A second revealing feature is that of the mouth area.  The face is meant to enhance the overall image you want to portray.  It should compliment your own features.

The supplies for a clown face involve concealer, foundations, highlights, shadows, neutralizers, brushes, glitter, mineral powders, sealers, adhesives, cleaners, applicators, sponges, and skin treatments.  Invest in good quality supplies for a long-lasting satisfaction with the products.

Why You Must Keep Up With Facepainting Ideas

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

It might not seem important to you right now, but generating new face painting ideas can be crucial to the progression of any type of face painter. Many face painters, both professional and amateur, like to stay within the face painting ideas with which they are already comfortable. Of course there are new learning procedures when it comes to new face painting ideas. Some face painters do not like generating new face painting ideas because of this. However, if anyone wants to become a successful face painter, then generating new face painting ideas is crucial to achieve success.

By creating new ideas you are opening the capabilities to your skills as a face painter. By taking the time to learn new face painting ideas, you are able to provide a larger variety of face painting ideas to your clients. This makes your skills as a face painter not only more appealing, but it also makes you look more professional, as your face painting ideas are not limited. By having a wide range of face painting ideas, you are able to cater to different ages and different types of people. By limiting your face painting ideas, you are excluding potential customers who could use your face painting abilities.

There are constantly new characters, designs and things that go in and out of style and popularity. By keeping up with face painting ideas, you know what is not only currently popular, but also have an idea of what you will be painting on a regular basis. This will help you become more prepared and help you anticipate what type of requests you will be asked for. This is very important, because it will allow you to bring the necessary tools and enough paint to handle these most common requests. By not knowing what the most popular requests are based upon what is popular and what is not, you will not have any face painting ideas that will really cater to what people really want. This will not only diminish your popularity and abilities as a face painter at the event you are working, but it could also lead to negative publicity as your capabilities as a face painter.

Face Painting

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

So, you’ve decided to undertake the wonderful art of face painting? It can prove to be quite an adventure and satisfying for the artist as well as the customers. As in any other venture, just be sure to do your research concerning all the aspects of face painting: insurance, taxes, supply costs, booth costs, travel costs, investment cost, time consumed in the actual painting, prices to charge, advertisement and so on.

One summer, members of a particular church decided to hold a fall festival. When considering what one member could contribute, she decided to volunteer services as an artist. Little did she know how popular the face painting booth would prove to be! For two and a half hours, she painted face after eager face. Sometimes the kids would stand in line over and over again, asking to be painted on their hands when they ran out of room on their faces. Some even contributed their own ideas about coloring and design, which proved to be quite helpful, and drew them even more into the experience. Eventually she had to begin turning them away in order to wind it up and begin clean-up, painting long after the other booths had stopped being active. While this adventure was a charity event and loads of fun, it does prove the need for enforcing limits on your time when deciding to use face painting as a profitable business.

Two valuable lessons learned were:

1. Limit the amount of conversation between you and the participant during the actual painting, and learn to control your brush. (If you make the child giggle, you may have to start all over when your brush strays and smears paint in an unwanted area.)

2. Make a picture chart of the drawings and colors you are able to offer. Know how long each drawing takes, maybe charting the easier pictures on one area and the more detailed pictures in another. You may want to set up the drawings as to what category they fall into. Be sure your colors on your chart are similar to the actual colors you are able to provide.

Some simple ideas for face painting young children are:

Flowers, bunny, sailboat, turtle, spider, duck, butterfly, ladybug, dinosaurs, ghosts, cross, puppy, bear, kitty, fish, alien, dolphin, fruit with faces, facial expressions, names, flags, clowns, feathers, birds, street signs.

You may want to include sparkles, pastel colors, glitter gel or rubber stamps and stencils, and stick-on jewelry to accent your art work.

If you want something more simple and quick to apply, try temporary tattoos. Although not your own personal artwork, these are still a form of art, and there are loads of them on the market. All you need to apply these is a bowl of water and a face towel.

Should you decide to get more adventurous with your face painting, you may want to try face painting using airbrushing. Investing in a class for this would be a wise idea if you are new to the idea of airbrushing. It would better your success over the long-term to be as well-prepared and informed as possible, no matter what type of face painting you choose.

Thanksgiving Decorations Kids Can Make

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday! What a spiritual renewal to take a day to reflect over the past year about just how good God has been to you and your family, to give you harvest and shelter, health and hope. To get the most out of this joyous occasion, make some holiday crafts with your children. These days, Thanksgiving often gets squeezed out by Hallowe’en’s spooky decorations and the lights and gala of Christmas. With the following holiday crafts, your home can be decorated for this quieter but important celebration.

Turkeys, of course, are a natural choice for decorations. A familiar project at this time of year is for a child to trace around his or her hand and make the resulting drawing into a turkey. The thumb is the head and the fingers are the tail feathers all displayed. While many of the turkeys that are raised for food are now the domestic white variety, the turkeys eaten by the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving were the wild brown ones. The tail feathers on a wild turkey are brown, but they are iridescent. catching light and appearing to be multi-colored. This is why children color the tail feathers in bright colors.

The turkey’s head has a wattle under the beak. This is a vertical flap of loose skin that is red colored. Be sure to draw this in order to make the hand turkey look like a turkey. Add skinny legs and bird feet. When done, the children can cut out the turkeys and hang them on the wall. It’s really cute to make a whole flock of these turkeys in the sizes of all the hands in the family. The little hand shapes are particularly sweet.

Another nice turkey decoration to make when making Thanksgiving holiday crafts is a turkey door decoration. Make a brown construction paper body and head of a turkey. Now make a large number of colored feather shapes. Each family member writes on a feather something he or she is thankful for before attaching as part of the turkey’s tail. Repeat until all the feathers are used, and hang the turkey on the front door to greet visitors with a message of gratitude. Make a sign to accompany the turkey that says “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good!” or simply “Be thankful!” or “We’re thankful for you!” or whatever you like.

Children love making construction paper chains. To further decorate the house for Thanksgiving, let them make a paper chain in fall colors as one of their holiday crafts. Using 9 by 12 inch construction paper, cut the paper in half across the long side and cut the halves into one inch thick six inch long strips. Use a stapler to attach the ends of the strip into a circle. Loop the next strip into the circle and staple it. Continue the process alternating colors of brown, red, yellow, and orange. When the chains are long, you can drap them along the ceiling or stair rail. If you don’t make the door turkey, the children can write something they’re thankful for on each strip of paper before adding it to the chain.

Thanksgiving is too nice a holiday to let the other more commercial holidays crowd it out. By making holiday crafts to decorate the home for Thanksgiving, you can keep this day special, too. The extended family, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., will be pleased to see the holiday crafts the young ones have made to decorate the house and make it cheerful for their visit.

Christmas Craft: Bead and Pipe Cleaner Ornaments

Friday, September 11th, 2009

328674718_b4a35d6535_m-christmas-tree1
Christmas ornaments made from ordinary pipe cleaners and inexpensive acrylic beads are very pretty and easy to make. They look quite impressive, yet are easy enough for small children to make. This is one Christmas craft idea to use again and again. Older people will enjoy making this Christmas craft, too, which can be varied to make a variety of sparkling ornaments for your Christmas tree.

3152824664_f58628e095_m-pipe-cleaner-snowman

To make the bead and pipe cleaner ornaments, you need common pipe cleaners in desired colors and acrylic beads. Two types of beads are particularly effective when strung on pipe cleaners. One type is called a sunburst bead, but is also known as a paddlewheel bead, snowflake bead, or starburst bead. These beads have six faceted paddles spaced equally around a center that contains the hole for stringing. When several of these sunburst beads are strung consecutively, they fit against each other in an interlocking pattern.

The other type of bead that is also effective for this Christmas craft is called the tri bead or propeller bead. It has three rounded bumps arranged around the stringing hole. Like the sunburst beads, the tri beads interlock when strung consecutively. For the most sparkly and attractive Christmas ornaments, get tri beads and/or sunburst beads in translucent colors of red, green, and clear. The tri beads can also be found in metallic gold and silver which can be used in this Christmas craft as well.

3111339163_ca58a61182_m-pipe-cleaner-canes-wreaths

Pipe cleaners are also available in silver and gold tinsel as well as chenille of all colors. For this Christmas craft, the best colors to use are the metallics and Christmas colors. The beads cover the pipe cleaners, but the ends will need to be twisted together and made into hangers, so they will show.

Anyone, even small children, can string these beads on pipe cleaners. Bend up the end of the pipe cleaner so the beads don’t fall off. The pipe cleaner works like a needle, making a needle unnecessary. For best results, show the children how to alternate colors when stringing, or start a pattern of three colors. When the beads are strung on the pipe cleaners, they can be bent into different Christmas shapes. For instance, string red and clear beads alternately, then bend down one end of the pipe cleaner for a candy cane shape. Or alternate red and green beads and form a circle for a wreath. Use a red pipe cleaner to form a small bow to decorate the wreath. Form a hanger for the Christmas craft or simply slip the circle over a branch of the tree.

If you experiment with clear beads and silver pipe cleaners, you can make some beautiful snowflake or star ornaments. Snowflake designs can be twisted of silver pipe cleaner only, without the beads for a simple but pretty decoration.

Bead and pipe cleaner ornaments are a Christmas craft you will find yourself using every year. Children and their parents will both appreciate this simple yet pretty Christmas craft.

Airbrush Art On T-Shirts

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Putting airbrush art on T-shirts can be a fun and creative hobby. For those who want to take it a step further, it can also be a fun and exciting business. T-shirts sporting airbrush art are popular and unique to wear. What makes airbrushed t-shirts so unique is that one-of-a-kind images can be created, giving the wearer a shirt that no one else has. This makes for a pretty fun hobby or profitable business.
3294597322_7a6358c447_m-airbrushed-tshirt
The great thing with airbrush art is that you really do not have to know how to draw. All you need to know how to do is successfully use the stencil that you wish to use for your design. The main key is learning how to control the airbrush gun so that you can get the paint only where you want it and not overcast the paint where you do not want it. Once you master that then your options are endless with the vast array of stencils out there.

A bottom feed or siphon feed airbrush works best when putting airbrush art onto a t-shirt. You should always stick with a name brand airbrush when airbrushing. The best name brands to go with are the Iwata or Badger. The Paasche is also a good quality airbrush. You will save yourself money in the long run when using a name brand versus a generic airbrush.

When choosing an airbrush compressor, keep in mind that painting airbrush art onto t-shirts does require a high psi. The psi setting should be between 40 to 60. Be sure that your compressor is rated for the type of work you are going to be doing. In this case it will be airbrushing t-shirts. When doing airbrush art onto t-shirts as a business, then invest in a commercial air compressor. It will be worth it in the long run.

Most of the times you will need to heat set your paints so that they can be washed without fading or bleeding. There are a few ways that you can heat set your airbrush art onto the t-shirts so that it lasts. One way is to allow the design to fully dry.  Then place a cloth over it and iron the shirt with the cloth between the t-shirt and the iron. Always keep the iron moving though, so that you do not burn the material.   Another great way, if you are doing this at home, is to allow the design to dry and then turn the shirt inside out and throw it into the dryer for about 40 to 45 minutes on the highest heat setting. After this your design will hold up to laundering.

2357880226_a884f2e4b8_m-airbrushed-jacket

If you use a paint that does not require heat setting, then you should still set the design. A great way to do this with paints that do not require heat setting is to place the t-shirt by itself into a sink full of cold water that has salt mixed into it. The cold water and salt will help to keep the shirt when it is laundered from fading or bleeding.

Placing airbrush art onto t-shirts can be fun and exciting. However, you are not limited to t-shirts. Get creative and airbrush designs onto cotton underwear for you significant other. Airbrush socks for your family. The possibilities with clothing and airbrush art are limitless.
